  • Class Mammalia
  • Order Carnivora
  • Superfamily Cyonoidea
  • Family Cyonarctidae
  • Subfamily Cyoninae
  • Genus Cuon lykos

Kel wolves are a widespread species of cyonarctids. They are part of subfamily Cyoninae, along with Yari dogs, dire wolves, and the lesser cyonines like foxes. Kel wolves are the ancestral stock from which dogs were domesticated.

Distribution

Kel wolves are widespread across the Hajasith, and live in many kinds of habitats in both lowland and alpine regions. Among habitats that can support predators as large as the kel wolves, they are absent only from the southernmost regions of the Hajasith, and from areas with particularly high concentrations of sentients.

Physical Characteristics

Females range from 80 to 100 cm from nose to tail, and 25 to 40 kg. Males average 18 cm longer and 10 kg heavier.

Kel wolves vary widely in coat color and patterns, though almost all have white markings. Base coat colors range from light reddish and yellowish browns all the way through black. In a few populations, it is common for the white coloring to cover the majority, or even all, of the coat, and this occurs more rarely in most other populations.
